I am what i am because of my failures
Subhrashis is an alumnus of St Thomas School, Kidderpore, the second oldest school in India. He is a geologist by profession holding double masters from IIT-Kharagpur and IIT-Bombay.
He has ~ 17 experience in exploring black gold with a dream of making India self-sufficient in terms of energy requirements. Currently leading an aggressive exploration campaign for a multinational company, the author has been involved in key hydrocarbon discoveries in India and abroad. His experience as petroleum geologist helped him deal with the risks and uncertainties of life. These are the two important factors that govern our decision making, and thus our future.
Subhrashis, an established Toastmaster speaker, and has served as an elected President of his club. The club has helped him grow as a leader and a public speaker. His speaking skills helped him with his writing too. Apart from several international and national publications, he has also authored two non-fiction books.
When the author was a kid he learned yoga from his mother who is a certified yoga trainer from Bengal Yoga Association. It made him realise the importance of health. He has seen his family endure endless struggle from childhood. He has lost loved once not only to old age but also to serious illness much before their time. Then he almost lost his family in a terrible car crash which led to depression and deterioration of his health.
The accident changed him. It made him realise that life is too long to avoid failure and too short to stop after failing. The author and his family rediscovered the love of travelling. Together they gather experiences of a lifetime. Apart from being a wanderlust, he is also a gastrolust who loves to taste different cuisines from around the globe.
In his past time, he loves to play with his daughter, blog, travel and draw sketches. He is also passionate about reading, geology, science, philosophy and history. His experience working in a multicultural environment and his adventurous travels around the globe helped him appreciate diversity and how to deal with different personalities.
List of Failures
- My class teacher made a special request to my parents to demote me in a class due to the horrible marks I was getting.
- Failed in sports. Never athletic.
- Bullied in school. Always the shy type.
- Failed in relationships. Broken heart eh!
- Failed to learn swimming. Still scared of it.
- Failed in singing. My music teacher ran away after tolerating me for few weeks.
- I was a better dancer than a singer. My dance teacher expected me to succeed. Failed to do anything on that front.
- Been sexually assaulted as a kid.
- Wanted to study biology, my favourite subject, in higher secondary. Did not qualify because of poor marks.
- Wanted to be an actor. Phew!
- Failed in Medical Entrance Exam.
- Failed in IIT Entrance exams.
- Failed to get the subject or college of choice in BSc due to the poor marks.
- Failed in all interviews in MSc. Did not get a job.
- Failed to qualify in ONGC entrance exam
- Wanted to be a research scholar in NIO. Failed in NET scholarship twice and missed the opportunity.
- Failed to secure a gold medal in MTech due to reasons beyond my control.
- Rejection from numerous publishers to publish my book.
- Failed miserably in an important project review.
- Failed in a leadership test, the type that influence your career.
